Dr. Yano is an Adjunct Professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. She teaches the Practices of Evaluation: Theory and Methodology course for the EMPH Program. A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Yano received her PhD and MSPH from the UCLA School of Public Health, both in the Department of Epidemiology, and her BS in Psychobiology also from UCLA. A former Institute of Medicine Pew Memorial Trusts Health Policy Fellow, she minored in biostatistics and specializes in research methods and health policy analysis.


Dr. Yano has over 25 years’ of program evaluation and health service research experience. She is Co-Director at the VA Greater Los Angeles HSR&D Center of Excellence for the Study of Healthcare Provider Behavior and recipient of a VA HSR&D Research Career Scientist Award for her outstanding accomplishments in health services research, mentorship and service. Dr. Yano is an internationally recognized expert on organizational influences on quality of care and on evaluation of impacts of system reorganization and practice-level quality improvement (QI) interventions. She is PI of numerous studies, including an historical evaluation of the area and organizational determinants of VA's quality transformation, the implementation and impact of VA patient-centered medical homes (PCMH) and the impact of practice structure on the quality of care for women veterans and racial-ethnic minorities. She has also been instrumental in advancing VA's women's health research agenda, briefing the Institute of Medicine on VA's expansive portfolio, and now working to develop a national consortium of investigators and a women veterans' practice based research network (PBRN) to accelerate evidence-based improvements in care.


Dr. Yano has taught Evaluation of Health Services in the Executive MPH Program for over 10 years, and was named EMPH Professor of the Year in 2007 and 2008. Dr. Yano mentors MD and PhD VA HSR&D career development awardees, co-directs the Center’s Associated Health Postdoctoral Program, serves as faculty mentor for the VA Health Services Research and Women’s Health Fellowship Programs, and serves on the Research Advisory Board of the RWJ UCLA and VA Clinical Scholars Program.
